The important role played by businesses in our daily lives:
They:
- Create Work and help generate wealth for their owners and employees.
- Supply the goods and services that we consume on a regular basis.
- Keep people occupied and not idle and bored. Our bodies and minds were created for Work. To keep them fit and healthy, they must be occupied by keeping hem busy. Exercising them. We therefore need Work, even for its own sake, paid or unpaid. Work is a therapy used to rehabilitate mental patients, prior to their discharge.
- Help alleviate poverty, crime and vice. “Idle hands are the workshop of the devil”, according to the Wise Man King Solomon of ancient Israel.
- Support educational institutions by providing work experience to their students, where that is needed as part of their degree programmes.
- Pay taxes on their taxable profits and from their workers to enable governments to fund public services. The more taxes it collects, the better it is able to do so.
The more businesses a country has the more prosperous it is. Its subjects also enjoy a higher material living standard. The contrary is also true. In countries with fewer businesses, unemployment is generally high, and consequently, crime and vice also tend to be higher, as idle and bored people do anything in order to survive, be it legal or illegal.
Accordingly, Creating Work is a powerful weapon for preventing poverty, crime and vice, not only tough law-enforcement on its own.
Whose responsibility is it to Create Work?
Generally, in modern free market economies, people generally expect their governments to Create Work and hire workers. And whenever unemployment is high, they blame the party in power. Come the next election, they can even vote it out of office.
However, this is a misconception. Under a free capitalist, market economy, the responsibility to Create Work is for all able-bodied citizens, not the powers that be. Enterprising members of the public Create Work in their efforts to earn a living.
While governments do Create Work in their course of delivering public services, generating employment is a by-product of those services. However, from time to time, governments do deliberately Create Work by investing in public building and construction works.
